Thanks to some help from rialian, it looks like the keyboard might at least be part of the problem with my laptop. Unfortunately, I don't think that is the whole problem.. but the keyboard is broken so I just ordered one to replace it.

tlttlotd, would you be able to help me install the new keyboard when it arrives? It should be arriving soon -- I ordered it with overnight shipping (but only a little while ago, so it might not actually arrive tomorrow).
