Politicians (both local and Bush) are working with construction companies in plotting to pave the planet (satirical). The construction companies would be making billions off these projects which would wipe out wetlands, totally negate environmental protection, serve only to strengthen the power of major corporations, and not actually do a thing to help traffic, like they claim.
This particular effort is in Maryland, but there have been plans going in in Texas and Arizona, amongst other places, as well. People have been opposing this sort of thing for years, but they're still pushing for it (because it means a lot of money for them, while screwing everyone else over).
Seeing how the current administration has been working -- and influencing others to act similarly -- would not be at all surprised to see them do this regardless of how much opposition they face. But this thing needs to be protested, regardless. NBC is running a poll to see how people feel about it. Vote 'No,' for the love of all things sacred.
Research has shown that this sort of thing is extremely non-cost effective, actually worsens traffic issues, and serves only to create more pollution, and draw more big-business franchises into the area.
Seriously, these people want to create a world similar to the future Earth in Vandread. Which is fine with me, as long as we get to live on other planets, and fight them off with a steady supply of transforming mecha.
